The meaning behind the Day of the Dead artwork
Gustavo Borboa illustrated this deck, drawing on traditional Día de los Muertos symbols. Each suit carries a specific meaning: Spades represent the flint knife of the god of death, Hearts contain the soul, Clubs symbolize mysticism and nature’s power, and Diamonds represent the material world left behind. The King and Queen of Clubs are Aztec deities of the dead, while the Jack of Clubs is a Mexican charro (horseman). The back of the cards features a lacework pattern inspired by Papel Picado, the decorated tissue paper that represents wind and life’s fragility.
