The Gang is a cooperative poker card game where 3 to 6 players work together as a team of thieves cracking vaults. Instead of betting or bluffing, you signal the strength of your hand by claiming numbered poker chips — without speaking. No poker knowledge is needed to start, and a hand-ranking reference card helps everyone play within minutes. The game plays in about 20 minutes and is designed for ages 10 and up.

How does a cooperative poker game work?

In The Gang, everyone is on the same side. You play through a series of heists, each represented by a vault. To crack a vault, players must correctly rank their hands from strongest to weakest using only poker chips to communicate. If the group gets the order right, the vault opens. After three vaults, you win. But if you trigger three alarms by misranking hands, the whole team loses. There is no individual winner — either the gang succeeds together or fails together.

What does “reading teammates” mean?

Players cannot talk about their cards. Instead, each player takes a poker chip with a number that indicates how strong they believe their hand is relative to others. As chips are claimed and possibly swapped, everyone watches the flow of numbers around the table. The key is reading subtle signals: who grabbed low chips quickly? Who hesitated? It's a test of intuition and trust, not poker skill.

Is poker experience required to play?

No. The game includes a hand-ranking reference card that explains which hands are stronger. Most groups start playing within minutes of opening the box. For those who want more challenge, four difficulty modes and 20 challenge and specialist cards add layers of strategy. The game scales in complexity as players become more experienced.

Who is The Gang best suited for?

This game works well for family game nights, groups of friends, and anyone who enjoys cooperative card games like The Crew. Quick rounds and escalating tension keep the energy high. The more players you add, the harder it gets to read everyone correctly. It's also recognized by awards: included on the Kennerspiel des Jahres recommendation list, a finalist for the ASTRA Best Toys Play Award, and a finalist for Grown-Up Toy of the Year. Thames & Kosmos, the publisher, is known for the award-winning co-op card game The Crew.
